MR. W. CRICHTON

A prominent architect of Wellington, Mr. William Crichton, collapsed and died suddenly. He had not been in good health since he met with an accident at the new Wellington Hospital building some months ago. A son of the late Mr. George Crichton, merchant, of Wellington, Mr. W. Crichton was born in Cornwall, England, in 1861. About 47 years ago he came to New Zealand with his parents and entered the Public Works Department. Later he became an architect on his own account, and was joined by Mr. J. H. McKay in 1901 and Mr. V. P. Haughton in 1923. Mr. Crichton was recently asked, together with Messrs. W. Page and S. F. Fearn, to report upon a civic centre for Wellington. Racing was one of his interests, and he was one of the original guarantors of the Wellington Racing Club.
