GATHERING AT TE KUITI
ATHLETES AND AXEMEN
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, To-day. The annual sports and axemen's carnival, under the auspices of the combined Friendly Societies’ and Sports Club, took place at Te Kuiti on Saturday, when notwithstanding the unsettled weather conditions, there was a large attendance. Most of the events produced keen competition, and the splendid performance of J. E. Richardson, the winner of the 15-inch standing chop, was a feature of the sports. The attendance of the Auckland Highland Pipe Band, which for the past nine years has attended these sports, contributed in no small measure to the success of the gathering. A new feature of the sports was the horse events. At a social and dance held in the Parish Hall in the evening prizes were presented by Mr. J. C. Rolleston, M.P. A smoke concert, at which representatives from Otorohanga and Tangitu Clubs were present, was also held for the friendly society members, over 150 being present.
