EARLY-MORNING BLAZE

FIRE DESTROYS COTTAGE OUTBREAK AT BIRKENHEAD (From, Our Oxen Correspondent) BIRKENHEAD, To-day. Fire completely destroyed a fourroomed cottage in Glenfield Rd., Birkenhead, at one o’clock this morning. The house was occupied by Mr. Daniel Edwards, and owned by Mr. Long, of Papatoetoe. The occupants were away from home and the fire was noticed by a Mr. Hall, who, as no telephone was available, motored to Northcote and rang the fire bell. In the meantime, residents with an emergency hose and buckets endeavoured to quell the outbreak, but without success The Northcote Fire Brigade arrived and was able to prevent the adjoining house from catching alight. The insurances are not available.
