PERSONAL NOTES
The advancement of utility poultry, as far as egg production and a combination of breed characteristics are concerned, has been of a very pronounced character during the past decade, and probably none has done more to bring this to the high level it has attained than has Mr. J. H. Kissling, of “Rexdale” Poultry Farm, Mangere. The wonderful success which has rewarded his efforts should serve as an object lesson to many who are thinking of taking up this phase of industrial life.
It is several years since Mr. Kissling became interested in poultry, Rhode Island Reds being the breed he took up, and his them is as keen as ever. Later on he took up White Leghorns, Black Orpingtons, Barnevelders, White Runners, and has now fallen a victim to the charms of that wonderful all-round breed, the Light Sussex.
In his search for high egg-prcduc-tion. Mr. Kissling has never lost sight i of first-grade eggs. Every year his ’ successes in the various laying tests and utility shows have been more and ; more pronounced. At the Mount j Albert laying test just closed his team ! of Rhode Island Reds put up a Dominion record by laying 938 eggs in 50 i weeks, whereas at the Masterton test j his Light Sussex won the Heavy Breed test and put up another Dominion \ record. Mr. Kissling has this week shipped \ a pen of White Leghorns to Norfolk i Island. Recently we paid a visit to “Rex- j dale” and can advise anyone interested in practical poultry culture to visit this farm. Mr. Kissling has some wonderful stock birds, which he is advertising for sale in this week's Sun. * • • Mr. W. A.
