! Preparatory to designing the massive I s ets tor “Mother Machree,” Fox Films I sent to Ireland for authentic data I covering the rugged coast along the I western shore. Then they erected a Galway village that won the unstinted i praise' of critical artists. In design- ' ing the sets they brought to the task first hand information gathered while abroad. Not only did they eauip the village with every known accessory, but they did not forget the loniac Cross, the ducks and the sheep, the oaks and the stacks ox peat cut from the hogs. The plan was carried out in the minutest detail. Dirt roads were constructed and then flooded, so that the Irish peasants were seen wading through mud. Sheep for the background shots were specially imported. Costumes were designed from photographs of peasants sent from the interior of Ireland by cameramen specially assigned to this duty.
United Artists have borrowed Rod La Ilocque for “La Paiva” to be directed by Fred Niblo. This picture to have been a starring: production for Miss Gloria Swanson. Miss Swanson, however, elected not to do it, for Lupe Velez will play the feminine lead. Miss Velez has just signed a five-years’ contract with United Artists.
