Racing at Ellerslie

IN THE SHADE WINS EASTER r glorious weather, and in the presence of a very large attendance, the autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was opened at Ellerslie to-day under the most favourable conditions. The course was in excellent order, and there was some spirited racing. Results:—

Time, 2.7 2-.*> t Mask’s Good Finish Satrap £3.19S was backed as if the race for the President’s Handicap was all over, and outside of the* three-year-old those best supported were Mundane £1,424, Princess Konnie £ 1,171, Mask £824 and Corinax £778. An even start tivv Papatu and Le Choucas lead out of the straight from Mask, Hipo, Town Bank, Queen Arch, Transformer, Ballaehulish and Corinax, Mandane tailing the field. Passing the six furlongs Corinax took up the running from papatu, Le Choucas, Queen Arch, Mask, Town Bank, Hipo, Transformer, Satrap, Mandane, Desert Glow and Princess Ronnie, with Ballachulish last. Crossing the top the favourite made a forward move, and into the home stretch the order was Corinax, Papatu, Queen Arch, Satrap, Le Choucas, Mask, Town Bank, Mandane and Desert Glow. Once straightened up the favourite looked to have a chance, but he failed to go on with it. Then Mask joined issue with the leaders, and in a tight ft nisi i won by half a length from Papatu, with Town Bank a neck away, third, a head in front of Mandane. Next came Hipo, Satrap, Queen Arch, Corinax, Princess Ronnie, Desert Glow, Le Choucas and Ballachulish, with Transformer the whipper-in. Both Mandane and Satrap were unlucky. Time, 2.362Easy for Damaris The Oaks was the best of good things for Damaris, who was favourite at £2,545. but at a fair price. Best backed of the other runners were Doree £1,861 and Ti Tree £1,484, with Auric ulus £ 6C5 the outsider. Ti Tree went out to set a solid pace, leading past the post by five lengths from Auriculas and Miss Mercia, with Damaris, Doree and Wild Pigeon all handy. Down the back the leader began to slacken up, the favourite lying second here, with Miss Mercia, Aurieulus, Doree and Wild Pigeon within striking distanqe. Approaching the half-mil© Damaris took the lead and carried them along at a good bat, and was joined by Aurieulus, with Ti Tree, Wild Pigeon and Doree .just behind. At the furlong post Damaris went away to win by four lengths from Aurieulus, with Ti Tree only a head away. Wild Pigeon was another four lengths, back, Doree live lengths off, and Miss Mercia last. The sectional times were: Three furlongs 40, half-mile 52 2-5, live furlongs 1.7 3-5, six furlongs 1.20 3-5, mile 1.47, and the mile and a-half 2.36 3-5.
