BOY AND GIRL FAMINE
JUVENILE LABOUR SHORTAGE Decline in the birth-rate during the war is seriously affecting the supply of young people in British industry. “It is acute now,” said a Labour Ministry official, “but the falling off will be felt still more in 1929 and 1930.” Several Northampton and Leicester firms will have difficulty in engaging sufficient young workpeople to cope with the flow of orders. “Apart from the fall in the birthrate during the war,” said the Leicester Chamber of Commerce secretary, “the periods of depression through which we have been passing will also have a detrimental effect on the birthrate, and we shall feel the effects of it in a few years’ time.”
