OTAHUHU WINS
PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS EIGHT THOUSAND PUPILS PRESENT BIG DAY AT THE DOMAIN Eight thousand children, representing 51 schools of Auckland and districts, assembled at the Domain on Thursday for the annual sports meeting conducted by the Auckland Primary Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association, and combined to make the affair the most successful yet held. Otahuhu boys, with 122 points, carried oft the championship banner, and Bayfield, with 56, was runner-up. The Girls’ Shield was won by Epsom, with 111 points, and Meadow bank in second place. /~\NE of the few days when the chilw dren can meet in the open in their thousands, Thursday proved to be a red-letter day for them, and they spent a thoroughly enjoyable time, and gave their parents and friends a treat that seldom comes their way. Lusty young voices yelled themselves hoarse as the day wore on, and their champions bounded home to victory in the many events set down for decision. From as far North as I-lel-ensville and as far South as Drury, came representatives, and it fell to the lot of the Otahuhu boys to supply the champions, this school gaining a decisive victory over all others. The girls were successful in keeping the shield in Auckland, honours going to the Epsom School.
The running events. the skipping, overhead ball games, the cycling, the long and broad jumps, -were all keenly ccmtested, and fought out in the true spirit of sportsmanship that seems to be the forte of the youngsters of today. With over S.OOO entries it would have been thought that the officials, under Mr. C. W. Garrard, the referee, had set themselves an almost impossible task, but for promptitude and excellence of conduct this meeting could never be bettered. A competent staff of women teachers handled the girls’ events, and equally competent men were in charge of the boys. In rapid succession the heats of each event, many of Avhicli numbered 12, were put through, and the finals taken in the afternoon were equally as fast, the meeting being completed shortly after 4 o'clock.
