WENT BACK FOR WALKING STICK
(From Our Own Correspondent) OKAIIIAU, To-day. OKAIHAU railway station was the scene of a shockingaccident last evening, when a middle-aged man, Mr. Thomas Manly, a resident of Ohaeawai, was run over and killed instantly by a train.
rjpHE train arrived about 7.30 o’clock, ; and Manly, after leaving it, walked to the end of the platform, and was seen leaning against the railing while shunting operations were in progress. Apparently, he suddenly remembered leaving his walking-stick in the carriage, and in stepping on to the carriage platform to get it, he slipped and fell between the carriages.
The whole train was then in motion and four wheels of a carriage passed over his body.
! His cries were heard by people on j the platform, and Charles Blair rushed to apply the Westinghouse brakes and stopped the carriages. However, the body, which was mutilated horribly, had been dragged some distance before the train could be stopped. Heath was almost instantaneous. Dr. Todd and the police were brought from Kaikohe, and the body was taken there.
Deceased was unknown here, but has been identified as a Mr. Manly, of Ohaeawai.
