LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION
The question of disarmament was , considered by the Auckland executive i of the League of Nations Union, and, j on the recommendation of a. sub-com-mittee, consisting of Professor Belshaw and Mr. N. M. Richmond, some ; important resolutions, sponsored by Lord Cecil before the General Council : of the League of Nations Union in | England, were endorsed. They j The General Council believes that the ; general reduction and limitation of armaments by international agreement ; before it is too late is essential to the maintenance of permanent peace, the fulfilment of our international obligations, and the achievement of national economy. It therefore urges the Government — (1) To give effective support to the work of the League's Preparatory Commission on Disarmament and the new sub-Commission on Arbitration and Security proposed by the Eighth Assemly. (2) To promote the peaceful settlement of all international disputes by every means in its power, and with this object immediately (a) to sign the Optional Clause with any reservations that may be necessary to provide for the special position o fthis«country; <b> to announce its willingness to negotiate all-inclusive arbitration agreements with any civilised nation, on a model to be established by the League of Nations. KZ) To co-operate wholeheartedly in carrying into effect the proposal of the Eighth Assembly that there should be systematic preparation of the machinery to be employed by the organs of the League of Na ions with it view to enabling the members of the League to perform their obligation under the Covenant.
