FINAL GALLOPS
There were some interesting try-outs at Ellerslie this morning. They are discussed on the late news page of this issue.
way to hold her position on the inside. Her chance came when there was an opening presented, and that was how she got through to score.
On the other hand, Reremoana drew a bad marble, and although he got away nicely and was always prominent he could not show sufficient speed to get clear or'find an opening to get on the rails. Throughout that race Reremoana was always in the picture, but—and here is the secret of his failure—he was always three or four horses out, and consequently was asked to cover a lot of extra ground. Writing from memory, it seemed that last Easter Saturday Reremoana had to cover from four to six lengths more than the winner, who had the inside running. That was why the Hallowmas gelding finished fourth and not first. Brilliant and all that Civility was that day, had Reremoana been favoured with the rails as she was he would have won the Easter Handicap for the third time in succession. Joy King, twelve months ago, was also not favoured with the best of runs. From this it will be seen that a good marble and rare sprinting ability out of the barrier are the assets to be looked for in the search for the winner of the A.R.C. Easter Handicap.
