A GREAT CARD
Brilliant Fields Will Line Up for Thrilling Contests
REVIEW OF THE PROGRAMME
IT needs only fine weather to ensure the success of the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn fixture, which is set down for Saturday and Monday next. The course is in splendid order, and with large acceptances in all events, particularly in the more important races, the meeting should rank with the best held at this popular rendezvous of turf enthusiasts. A review of the first day’s card follows.
11.32 PRESIDENTS HANDICAP .Mask .... Sll ° f £600; miles - Manaane ... S fi This is a fine field for an opening contest, and should Satrap . 8 6 be productive of a spirited contest throughout. Mask Glow . 8 « heads the list, and it is doubtful if he can concede the Macroom 11 . *7 8 weight to Mandane, whose recent victories include the Valkon .* .* * 7 6 A.R.C. Summer Cup and Wanganui Cup, both meriPapatu . . [ 7 torious efforts. With 8.6 she roads particularly well. Corinax ... 7 3 Satrap came into prominence at Trentham three weeks Princess ago, and on his running there will have to T R ?-J? nie * * 1 H *>e regarded with fresh respect. No doubt his rider ir? Ghoucas . i « will try to get to the front early, and if he does then Autoinne .*. ! 7 0 will have a chance; if not he will be out of it. Ballacnulish ! 7 0 Desert Glow is earning a name for unreliability, but if Barometer ..70 in the mood, he and Transformer will be found in the In the Shade 7 0 forefront. Macroom has been consistency itself, and Star comet . 7 0 Valkon was unlucky over this distance at Paeroa. Le Town Bank . 7 0 Choucas and In the Shade are both in the Easter, and dueen Arch . 7 o the one to be started here will be prominent. Princess Ronnie has been working brilliantly, and if she can keep out of trouble she may be the one to trouble the favourite most. Of those in the lower division, Barometer (if wet), Corinax (who notched a bloodless victory at Whangarei on Saturday) and Star Comet have the best credentials. Probably the favourites will be: MANDANE and SATRAP. 1?17 GREAT NORTHERN OAKS Of £700; 11 miles. The field promises to be up to the standard, and Auriculus . Bto perhaps a bit better, than of recent years, although there fdun 8 10 is nothing standing out like Lady Desmond last year—- • • 15n and she was beaten. Damaris ran well in the St. Leger, Miss Mercia ’ 810 rim , S! 2? oped } veU in company at Ellerslie this morning; Doree ... 8 30 'Vila Pigeon lias won over the journey, Doree has gone Ti Tree . . S 10 vveH for ten furlongs, Ti Tree is a brilliant filly when Wild Pigeon 8 10 right, and Auriculus and Partial Eclipse may get the distance. Miss Mercia has shown evidence of being able to go a middle distance. It is an awkward event, a veritable trap for the unwary punter. The favourites may be: DAMARIS and WILD PIGEON 1.2 BRIGHTON HURDLES Of £550; 2 miles Wedding There have been better hurdle KeiUcomet » 6 March . .11 8 fields than this seen out in this King Asians 9 6 Archibald . . 11 8 event, but nevertheless they are not Revel .... 9 1 • I?!?”,,',,;, • • 7,, 1 j a bad lot, with probably thirteen to Rotoanui ... 9 1 Ladv vlintrk %,2 face the starter. A complete review of the acceptors appears in another part of this issue, and sufficient to say that there are four specially favoured: Joy King, Bright Glow, Laughing Prince and Awarere and the best backed pair will no doubt be: JOY KING and LAUGHING PRINCE. ?37 GN> CHAMPAGNE STAKES Of £1,500; 6 furlongs Prhice >ld * * 810 This is perhaps one of the finest fields that has Humphrey 830 aver lined up for this classic, and the race on Saturday Raasay ... 830 promises to be one well worthy of the occasion. There Staghunter . 8 10 are* perhaps a quartette that stand out more or less, and Mooregas . . 8 10 they are Raasay, Prince Humphrey, Episode and Gold Avon Court ! 8 8 M pney, but right on the day Staghunter and Freehold Mithra .. . ! 8 8 will have to come into the reckoning. Mooregas will Gold Money . 8 8 t>e among the missing, for he is not coming north. Prodice . . . 8 8 Probably there will be another couple of defections by White Wings 8 8 Saturday, and yet there will be quite a brilliant field to face the starter at the six furlong barrier. The two that will be entrusted with most support are: RAASAY and PRINCE HUMPHREY 90? MANGERE STEEPLECHASE Of £400; about 24 miles r u . .ii.-v 9 nC^nufUS in 1 - So early in the season is it that Memsahib’ . 1 9 1 iTraila *’* lo o there is very little to go on in the Clockwork ..90 Revel * * * 1 9 5 way of form. Those most likely to see out the journey are Lucy Rose Gesto, Perception and White Wings. ..The last-named will probably be sent for the classic in preference, leaving in her absence the public to make favourites of: PURE GOLD and PERCEPTION 157 EDEN HANDICAP „ * Of £400; 1 mile Modest Boy .88 ~ _ , .
