CARGO ON FIRE

OUTBREAK AT SEA

BREEZE REACHES WANGANUI Press Association. WANGANUI, To-day. When the Breeze, from Southern ports, was 40 miles from Wanganui about midnight, a fire was noticed in the after-hold, where 40 tons of lime in sacks, flour, potatoes and hay were stored. rpilE hatches were battened down, A and on arrival brigades were summoned, also a team of wharf labourers. The lime was burning fiercely, and it was a slow, tedious undertaking to remove the cargo, as the men could only work for a few minutes at a time before being relieved. The brigade is keeping the fire well under control, but it will be some hours before the hold is emptied. Present indications point to most of the. cargo being damaged, but there probably will be little structural damage- to the vessel.
