ROAD AT MERCER
IMPROVEMENTS UNDER WAY NEED OF CARE ]N PASSING That portion of the road south of Mercer, between Mercer Wharf and the bridge over the Wliangamarino Stream, which runs between the railway line and the river, is to be widened- and levelled. The cutting Is at present being made on the other side and to make this wide enough to carry temporary traffic, the existing road will, in many cases, have to be narrowed down to permit only single-way traffic. As soon as the new formation on the outside of the road is completed, the traffic will be diverted on to this formation and then the old road will be excavated and brought down to the new level. Jn the meantime, the greatest care must be exercised by motor-drivers when passing along this section of the highway. At the present moment a culvert is being formed and the speed at which cars are travelling represents a distinct danger to the workmen. The other day two service cars
passed this narrow point in the roadway at a speed of not less than 30 miles on hour in spite of th e fact that the workmen on the side of the road were clearly visible and the drivers must have known the danger they were causing to th© workmen from loose flying metal. Notices are being erected by the A.A.A., and as the construction proceeds, sufficient notices will be placed in prominent positions. All traffic using tli© road is urged to rigidly observe the warnings given. Failing the co-operation of the drivers, the department will be forced to seek the assistance of the police.
