GOOD FRIDAY PLAYS
CITY COUNCIL OBJECTS CHURCH BODY DISAPPOINTED Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. To-day. 1 The City Council lavt night refused ]an application made by members of St. Michael’s Church to give a per- : formance in the Choral Hall, on the j evening of Good Friday, of Robert ; Hugh Benson’s passion play, “The ; Upper Room.” and an application for permission to screen the picture. “The King of Kings,” in the Grand Theatre « on the same evening. ! The Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer, 1 said he felt that if permission were i granted, the council would make an unfortunate departure from the precedent set by former councils. He ; thought it was a very healthy custom i to have one day of the year absolutely 1 free from public entertainments. He was sorry that the Church had i asked for permission to break away ! from this custom and the Church ! might live to regret its action. I£ I the Church were permitted to give a play on Good Friday, he did not see i how they could object to a theatrical company giving a play on the same i da*y, provided it was a reasonably suitable one.
