Yesterday was almost as busy, between seven and j eight hundred new numbers being ♦ issued. So far 14,000 have been given i out as compared with 10,000 for the j corresponding period last year. It i> j expected that there will be many j applications right up to Easter from ! holiday-makers who intend tourinp ’ Officials calculate that there are les • than 1,000 registrations yet to be J made. • In former years motorists were allowed a fortnight’s grace in which t«> adopt the new plates, but were not allowed to fit them before April 1. This yeax all were to be replaced in the fortnight preceding that date. Licences will run until May 31 of next ■ year. So far only about 10,000 driving licences have been issued by the tralfi*; department. As there are on ar. average two drivers to every car, it will be seen that there are many yet to register. The department expects to be busy for over a week. Many local authorities are issuing [ licences and helping the city traffic I officials to hurry through their lengthy itask.
