FANCIED CANDIDATES AT ELLERSLIE

THE BIG THREE

THE three principal handicap events to come up for decision at Ellerslie on Saturday are the Easter Handicap, Brighton Hurdles and President’s Handicap, and in these contests the following horses (in addition to those whose pictures have already been published) are sure to come in for big support:—

drug was then called chloral hydrate, and my client was then charged with administering that drug to the dog. Jarrett has no charge to answer.” Air. Fenimore, 8.5., F.1.C., of London, stated that he examined the swab of saliva handed to Jarrett. “There were no traces of chloral hydrate,” he said, “but I found sodium chlorite, which is found in the saliva of human beings and all animals.” All*. T. G. Doyle, M.R.C.V.S., said that “it was impossible to locate chloral hydrate in saliva by taking a swab. The only manner it can be found was by examining the stomach. If the drug had been given to the dog it would cause burning of the tongue, swelling of the throat and facial organs. A couple of witnesses stated that .they backed the dog for Jarrett. Classic to Remain The Taranaki Stakes race will still be included in the 1929 programme, it was decided. The stake will remain the same (£500), and the question of the conditions as to penalties, etc., will be decided at a future meeting. Quixotic for Ponies There was a time when Quixotic (Absurd —Los Vegas) was considered good enough to win big sprints at Randwick —in fact, he did win there/as well as the rich Campbelltown Handicap at Warwick Farm, in which he defeated the Randwick record-holder Calmest, and a big field. Latterly, he was sold to Air. G. Woodham, but only last week he again changed hands and has been acquired by the A.R.C*. trainer, O. Pettitt, who has a number of good “ponies” in his care. Patadawn Interfered With The stipendiary stewards were mainly concerned at Rosehill recently with minor matters. In the second division of the Juvenile Stakes they reported that the Now Zealand horse Patadawn, ridden by W. Bartle, and Stadtholder, ridden by D. Munro. had met with interference. Evidence taken pointed to Findlay, who rode Humdira, being somewhat to blame, but the stewards decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. Patadawn was not mentioned in the betting. Success in Australia New Zealand-bred horses have met with some recent successes in Australia. At Orange. New South Wales, the two-year-old Paper Aloney—Snow Waif filly Short Order won the Sires’ Produce Stakes, six furlongs, in which she carried 8.7 and started an odds-on favourite. Anotlier of Paper Money’s progeny. First Note, a three-year-old gelding from the Achilles mare Historiette, took the Final Welter Handicap, six furlongs, at Goldburn, New South Wales, fixture, while at the same meeting the Club Handicap, seven furlongs and fifty yards, went to Haughmond. by Limond—Leta. a halfbrother to Thespian, bred at Air. G. Ai. Currie’s Koatanui Stud. A couple of horses well-known to recegoers in New Zealand are thus commented upon by the Perth correspondent of the Sydney "Referee”:—”At the Canning Park meeting on March 17 the Martian gelding Gauntlet created a good impression by running a close second to the Blague gelding Blauvelt in the Jumpers’ Flat. The winner is owned by T. Tighc. who had not won a race for some time. The Otauru Kid gelding Otauru. who had won three races in succession, was sent out favourite for the Canning Handicap, and won easilv from Wealth. Otauru is raced bv 1-’. L. Billett.”
