Obituary

mr james Mclntyre

The death occurred of Mr. James Mclntyre at his home, Mclntyre Road. Mangere, on Saturday evening. He has been for 65 years a resident of Onehunga. When Mr. Mclntyre first visited Onehunga in 1862 the roads were so bad that it was necessary for coach passengers to help to cut tea-tree fascines so that they could get through the swamo. At the time of the Thames gold rush Mr. Mclntyre opened a branch of his Onehunga smithy business in the fields. Mr. Mclntyre, who was 92 years of age at the time of his death, was a member of Onehunga's first borough council. He is survived by a son. Mr. W. McIntyre. of Invercargill, and a daughter, Mrs. T. McKenzie, of Mangere.

MR. J. H. MORTENSEN

A well-known figure in Auc’-’and industrial circles, Mr. James Horace Mortensen, of 55 Richmond Road. Ponsonby, died suddenly on Saturday at the age of 48. Mr. Mortensen was secretary of the Grocers’ Assistants’ Union and other employees’ organisations. Born in , the Dominion, he had lived for the j past 30 years in Auckland. Sine.* 1913 he had been secretary of the grocers’ organisation, and for about the last 12 years he had been secretary of the Auckland Chemists* Employees' Association. He had been secretary of the Auckland Retail Shop Assistants’ Union for the past nine years. He acted on behalf of his union before the Arbitration Court on many occasions. In his earlier years Mr. Mortensen : was a keen volunteer artilleryman, and was the holder of a world’s championship for gun-laying. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the charity campaigns organised by the shop assistants of the city, and he was also keenly interested in the Christmas gift fund campaign. Mr. Mortensen is survived by his wife, one son and a daughter.

MR. W. T. WILLIAMS

Press Association. HASTINGS, To-day. The death of Mr. William Temple Williams at the age of 72. has occurred at Pukehou. He was the eldest son of the late Ven. Archdeacon Samuel Williams, and was well-known all over the Dominion for his famous Shorthorn and Jersey cattle herds.

Press Association." OAMARU. To-day. The death is announced of William Xicholson, Mayor of Hampden, at the age of 83. Foi* many years he lias been a conspicuous figure in public affairs, being a member of the Waitaki County Council, the Otago Education Board, the Waitaki High School Board, the Hospital Board Committee, and the A. and P. Association. Born in the Shetland Islands, he came to Xew Zealand in 1865, and took up farming, and since 1882 has been so engaged at Hampden.

M. GUSTAV ADOR

By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. GENEVA, Saturday. The death has occurred of M. Gustav Ador, formerly president of the International Commission of the League of Nations, aged 83. —A. and N.Z.-Sun. After the resignation of Federal Councillor Hoffman from the conduct of Switzerland’s foreign affairs in 1917, M. Ador succeeded him and in 1919 he became Federal President. When Switzerland joined the League of Nations he was appointed Swiss delegate and as such became president of the Economic and Financial Commission of th*- League, but relinquished tike post in September, 1924. owing to ill-health.
