AUSTRALIANS GO CHEAPLY
Play in Beautiful Weather
McGOVIR’S DEADLY LENGTH
DUNEDIN, To-day. THE Australia v. New Zealand second test match resumed in beautiful weather this morning. Merritt fielded for
Dickinson who had strained a tendon in his groin. With an endeavour to augment Saturday night’s score of 47 for four wickets, the Australian batsmen, Richardson and Alexander, walked to the crease punctually. McGirr and Blunt took up the bowling.
From hte outset the visitors batted with confidence, Alexander showing particularly good form when within a few overs he scored several boundaries by judicious cutting and leg glances. A quarter of an hour after the start, however, he met his downfall at the hands of Blunt, who got him lbw. He had scored 25 in 16 minutes. —S4—5 27. Richardson was more steady than spectacular, but just after Oxenham had joined him he was beautifully taken by Foley at second slip off McGirr, the fieldsman snapping him up with his left hand. —86—6—14. Oldfield, on coming in, was never comfortable against McGirr, who continued to bowl with deadly flight and length. The Wellington man had 15in slips and one fielding very deep. Read, who relieved Blunt, also exploited the off theory, and appeared to be getting considerable pace off the pitch. He was coming back in great style. Reward came his way when Oldfield skied one to Badcock at cover, who made no mistake. —93—7 —5.
Read’s average was now two for 9. Grimmett was the newcomer. The ex-New Zealander spoiled any chance of a sensational rout and wielded the willow more precisely than any of his predecessors.. The century came up after 98 minutes’ play. The batsmen now began to find gaps in the field. Blunt was not proving so successful at the top end, where he had relieved McGirr. T.ie fielding, however, was very keen, Badcock's work at point and cover being noth f g short of inspired. The throwing in was good,
and James was agility itself behind the stumps. Badcock took the ball from Read. The score at 12.30 was 115 for seven wickets. Details: NEW ZEALAND First Innings.
