Intrepid Woman Flier Is a New Zealander

MRS. KEITH MILLER EDUCATED AT TIMARU To a New Zealander goes the honour of being the first woman to fly from England to Australia. JT is revealed that Mrs. Keith Miller. now of Melbourne, who made the trip in the airplane Red Rose, was educated at the Craighead School, a well-known South Canterbury institution, now conducted by the Diocesan Board. By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.16 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The airplane Red Rose, in which Captain Lancaster and Mrs. Keith Miller (Melbourne) flew from England, reached the Newcastle race-

course in pouring rain and a gusty wind, which made landing difficult. There was only a few minutes’ supply of petrol left, so Captain Lancaster decided to risk alighting on the course, which appeared to be under water. The machine landed, and was caught by a gust of wind and turned toward the fence. Mrs. Miller averted an accident by climbing out of the cockpit, running alongside the machine and throwing her weight against the wing of thq plane, which thus swung round parallel with the fence, and missed it by inches. Mrs. Miller is an ex-pupil of the Craighead School, Timaru.—A. and N.Z.
