NEW TOURIST ROAD

CONSTRUCTION BEGINNING ROTORUA TO WAIKAREMOANA (Special to THE SUN.) GISBORNE, Thursday. Steps are being taken by the Government to realise an old project, the establishment of a permanent tourist route between Rotorua and Waikaremoana through Galatea. Some work was done to it years ago. but trouble with the titles of land wa,nted for the road stopped the work. In a week or two there will be camps established on the line of the road at the edge of the lake at Opuaruahine, about 16 miles from Bake House, and a point some 18 miles through the bush. Construction will begin where the surveyors have been engaged in out the route. The road is to run in the direction of Ruatahuna and Rotorua, and it is proposed to build a suitable jeUy for the shipment, of cars on a launch, by which they will be transferred to the Lake House side of Waikaremoana, near the top of the inlet. The surveyors are satisfied that the road can be put through without much trouble and that it will prove popular with travellers. A good grade Is possible and, as deposits of stone are said to exist along the line, metalling does not present a serious problem. Tents are now being pitched for the first batch of workmen, and 20 men will be at work in the course of the week.
