THE BONFIRE

I'm standing in the garden. I’m watching by the fire. Where gay and bright the dancing sprites Are leaping ever higher. Witches with dark, flowing hair And folded cloaks of grey. Are rising with their eyes aflame. And drifting far away. While grinning yellow goblins Among the embers play. Or chase their friends, the coal black imps, Who hide, and run away. Where do they go, I wonder. When all is dark and still? Perhaps behind that golden star Away beyond the hill.
