Hunt, of Wellington, arrived in Auckland yesterday to join the Marama, on an extended holiday. Mrs. A. E. Oswald, of Auckland, who has been the guest -of Mrs. H. Desborough, of Khandallah, has returned home. * * * Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Donald have left Auckland for Wellington, en route to England, where they will make an indefinite stay. Mrs. F. Lockwood, who has been visiting Auckland and Christchurch, left on her return to Sydney by the Marama yesterday. * * * Mrs. L. P. Blundell has returned to Wellington after attending the Red Cross Conference in Auckland, accompanied by Mrs. J. Blundell. * * * Mrs. T. C. Savage left Auckland this week for Wellington to join the Rotorua, en route to England, where she intends to stay for some time. Miss Conway who has been visiting Auckland left by the Limited express last evening for Wellington, en route for her home in Christchurch. -* * * Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Brice, Mr. S. ' + " ' ' ; ' VARIETY OF STALLS In the beautiful grounds surrounding “Abley,” the residence in Valley Road of Mrs. E. H. Potter, Mayoress of Mount Eden, a successful Paddy’s Market and garden party was held this afternoon in aid of the funds of the hospital auxiliary. The function was Opened by the president of the auxiliary, Mrs. Alfred Kidd, who was assisted by Mr. Vivian Potter, M.P. for the district. The organisation had been in the capable hands of Miss Payne, and the success attending the market was a tribute to the efficiency with whi'ch she had made all arrangements. The stallholders were as follow: Ice cream and drinks, Mrs. Anderson; naildriving competition, Mrs. Cox; jumble stall, Mesdames Mason and Whelan; provisions, Mesdames Marks and Johnson; cakes, Mrs. Morris; sweets, Mrs. Hooton; afternoon tea, Mesdames Sheldon and Whitehead; plain and fancy needlework, Mesdames Devereaux and Bellamy; guessing competition, Mrs. Rogers; cabbage patch, Mesdames Watson and Carey; gifts and fishpond, Miss E. Watt, Mrs. Heath, and Mrs. Cox. BRIDGE PARTY Mrs. P. Webster was the hostess at an enjoyable bridge party at her home iit Herne Bay yesterday afternoon, given in farewell to Miss Ethel Reese, of Christchurch, who has been spending a holiday in Auckland. Mrs. Webster received her guests in the lounge, wearing a charming gown of French mariette, embossed in autumn tones on a background of navy blue. Miss Reese -was wearing an attractively embroidered frock of black georgette, to which a touch of colour was added by a scarf of ombre shadings. The drawing room was daintily de-r corated with bowls of belladonna lilies, and in the dining room, where tea was served, splashes of gay colour were provided by tall vases of gladioli and dahlias. FAREWELL PARTY MR. AND MRS. W. MOORE Mrs. G. E. Maguire gave a delightful little party on Thursday afternoon in farewell to Mr. and Mrs. William Moore, prior to their departure to-day for Australia. The afternoon was spent in renewing old acquaintances. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Carr Rollett, Mrs. Bolitlio, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Ramsden, and Miss Gibbs.
AN ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Marjorie Beryl, eldest daughter of Mrs. Hill and the late Mr. A. J. Hill, of Helensville, to Victor Edward, the only son of Mrs. Aitkenhead and the late Mr. H. Aitkenhead, of Parakai. FOR CHURCH FUNDS SOCIAL EVENING An enjoyable social evening was held at Bombay on Thursday in aid of the Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. J. Hubbard, M.A., D.D., of Drury, gave an address on “The Life of Robert Burns.” Mr. E. D. McLennan, M.P., presided. Items were contributed by Misses Hislop, Audrey, Maitland, P. Gardiner, Mrs. Clanachan, Messrs. Greenlees, Finlayson, Clanachan and the church choir.
BRIGHT PARTY AT MOUNT EDEN Mr. and Mrs. James B. Donald were the host and hostess at a particularly bright and enjoyable party given in the Mount Eden Kiosk on Thursday evening. The place was delightfully decorated with great bowls of pastel pink dahlias, and against the dainty, colourful background, Mrs. Donald received her guests in a smart gown of black georgette mounted on a foundation of cloth of gold. Mrs. A. B. Donald was wearing a bef coming gown of fringed wineberry i georgette. Mrs. Alfred Porter chose a frock of fiower-patterned crepe de chine, ,in I shades of rose on a black background. Babies and All NEARLY 400 MEMBERS j ATTEND GARDEN MEET- I ING OF MOTHERS’ i LEAGUE. HER EXCELLENCY PRESIDES Her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson, who presided at the reunion of the members of the Mothers’ League, expressed the wish, when arrangements for the function were being made, that every member, even those with tiny babies, could attend. The members took her Excellency very literally, and yesterday afternoon between 300 and 400 folk were present together with a large number of quite young infants, who listened solemneyed to the speeches that were made during the afternoon. The reunion took place in the charming grounds surrounding Mrs. A. M. Ferguson’s residence in Victoria Avenue, Remuera, Mrs. Ferguson, the president of the Remuera branch of the league, having kindly lent her garden for the occasion. Of the 19 branches in the Auckland Province, 18 were represented yesterday. The members of the Remuera branch served tea to the guests under the shady trees that add beauty to Mrs. Ferguson’s lawns, and afterwards a few brief speeches were made. Her Excellency spoke of the wonderful progress made by the Mothers’ League in New Zealand, and said that it was not only growing in this country but in others as well, even in so far-removed a spot at Bagdad. The speaker stressed the ideals of the league and emphasised the power the league might wield for good in the life of the community. The Rev. Dr. C. H. Laws spoke of having been one of the first people to be approached by her Excellency when starting the league, and in glowing l .erms he referred to the lasting influence a mother’s training had on a child, and the importance of mothers having every opportunity to give their children the best of early impressions and good home environments. Mrs. Ferguson was thanked by Mrs. William McDonald, for lending her garden, and the Remuera branch was assured of the members’ appreciation of their hospitality. BIRTHDAY DANCE In honour of her daughter Marie’s eighteenth birthday, Mrs. R. Wilson gave a delightful dance at her home in Remuera Road last evening. The house was gay with floral decorations, and streamers of every bright shade flaunted their brave tints around the ballroom. Mrs. Wilson received her guests in the hall, wearing a smart gown of, moonlight blue georgette, embroidered with rhinestones and pearls. Miss Wilson was wearing a dainty frock of rose-dust taffetas, appliqued with trails of silver flowers. Among those present were: Mrs. J. Alexander, who wore a frock of beaded black georgette. Mrs. W. Percy, in an embroidered frock of autumn-brown chenille. Mrs. Hutchens, . wearing -a crystal beaded frock of black chiffon. Mrs. L. Roberts, whose frock of leafgreen georgette was relieved with pink. Miss W. Wilson, frock of opal blue taffetas. Miss Irene Percy, taffetas frock of shot green and gold shades. Miss Beryl Rhodes, beaded frock of ivory georgette. Miss Faigan, rose and black sequined frock. Miss R. Mason, frock of Canton jade georgette. Miss N. Simpson, sequinned froclc of wistaria georgette. Miss Mabel Russell, frock of black georgette and lace. Miss Hardley, peach-tinted frock of ninon, with insets of silver. Miss INI. Hardley, embossed frock of leaf-green crepe de chine. Miss E. Walker, rose and gold frock of brocaded tissue. Miss M. Jackson, petalled frock of bricque georgette. Miss R. Cai-r, flounced frock of peachbloom georgette.
LYCEUM CLUB MUSICAL EVENING ON MONDAY The first concert for the 1928 season •will be given by the members of the Lyceum Club musical circle in the club rooms on Monday evening at 8 p.m. A particularly good programme has been arranged and -will include trios, violin and piano solos, songs and recitations by Mesdames Corbin, Singer, Robertson, Hesketh and Prime and the Misses Simpson, Leatham and Audrey Perry.
