WICKET GOOD IN SPITE OF RAIN DEMPSTER AND MILLS OPEN Pres* Association.. DUNEDIN, To-day. The Australia v. New Zealand second cricket test began at Carisbrook this morning. The weather was tine but dull overhead, and. owing to the recent rain, the outfield was heavy. The wicket, however, was so good that when Lowry won the toss he elected to bat, Dempster and Mills being the opening pair against McNamee. Both batsmen opened their account with nicely-placed singles on either side of the wicket. They also shaped confidentlv against Blackio. who began trundling from the other end. As time went on it became evident that a wet ball did not suit the bowlers, and Dempster got several loose ones sweetly away to leg. Oxenham relieved McNamee, and in the last hall of the over missed Dempster’s off stump by a whisker. McNamee took Flackie’s place at the top end. Mills Decame conspicuous for his cutting, which was of consistent brilliance, but the ball was not travelling fast over the moist turf, the fieldsmen having ample time to save boundaries. Mills also distinguished himself by placing Oxenham to leg with welltimed strokes, and McNamee was punished by Dempster, who pulled a fulltoss strongly to the pickets. Twenty appeared at the end of 27 minutes play, and at 12.20 the score was 28. Details: — r . NEW ZEALAND ■! First Innings. DEMPSTER, not out 11 MILLS, not out 11 Extras 6 ~i* Total 28
