MR. HUGHES ATTACKED IRATE ITALIAN CONSUL By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright CANBERRA, Thursday. Commenting in the House of Repre sentatives on Mr. Hughes’s remarks regarding immigration, the Prime Minister, Mr. Bruce, rebuked Mr. Hughes for making incorrect statements. He said that when an es-Prime Minister began making incorrect statements on international affairs, it had a disastrous effect. The Italian Consul-General in Melbourne, commenting on Mr. Hughes’s remarks, characterised them as “childish, discourteous and vulgar.” They could, he said, be summarised in tke statement that in future he would include Mr. Hughes among the limited number of irresponsible persons in Australia who, without knowing what they talked about, seemed to And pleasure in offending Italians by the use of opprobrious terms when referring to them.—A. and N.Z.
