ONEHUNGA MEMORIAL

FOR JELUCOE PARK Onehunga Is to have a war memorial archway in Jellicoe Park. Already the sum of £ 64, part of the proceeds of the recent fair, has been put to the credit of the fund, and substantial donations have been promised. The Mayor of Onehunga presided over a large meeting last evening to receive the balance sheet of the recent Citizens’ Fair. The total receipts amounted to £433, an,d the expenses to £ll9, leaving a credit balance of £324. The committee, consisting of the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, T. R. Gilbert, J. E. Green, C. West, J. Robb, T. Moor, R. Buchanan, J. Kennedy. Ross, Mesdames Coldicutt, llyauiason, Turnbull, Gilbert, Over, Chapman, Pickering, Buchanan, Sibbin. Neill. Murdoch, Bull and Cullington, Mr. P.*J. Guppy, secretary, and Mr. T. H. Ashe, treasurer, has thus been enabled to pay Lewis Eady, Ltd., the sum of £260 due on the instruments of the Onehunga Citizens’ Band, and retain the balance of some £64 toward the erection of a war memorial archway at the entrance to Jellicoe Park, which is estimated to cost £l5O. Several substantial sums have been promised by Onehunga citizens for this object. Mr. T. R. Gilbert handed the treasurer of the fund £2O as a donation from the band toward the archway fund, being the amount of a rebate made by Lewis Eady, Ltd. Mr. P. J. Guppy, the secretary of the fair, was presented with an Onehunga rug by the Mayor and Mayoress in appreciation of his valuable services. Mr. A. Bovey, the bandmaster, on behalf of the members of the band, presented the Mayoress, Mrs. W. C. Coldicutt, with a bouquet in recognition of the work that she and her ladies’ committee had accomplished. 11 was resolved that the committee remain in existence until the memorial archway was an accomplished fact.
