Poets ’ Corner

SOMEBODY PASSED ME (Written for THE SUN.) Somebody passed me on the stair f The last of the twilight lingered there; A ghostly rustle of old brocade Somebody’s skirts as they passed me made. A flutter of sound on the empty air . . . Somebody passed me. Somebody passed me in the street, 1 heard the whisper of hurried feet, The mincing step of a high-heeled shoe (The very pavement seemed listening too), And lo! in my nostrils a fragrance sweet . . . Somebody passed me. 1 have questioned the empty air. Lain in wait on the twilight stair. Paused in the street with a dark unrest, But never a glimpse of that fleeting guest . . . In the high-heeled shoes of an oldworld wear . . . Somebody passed me. —WINIFRED S. TENNANT. Auckland. HEAD OF A YOUNG GIRL (Written for THE SUN) Black hair so sleekly “Etoned” that the light is tangled Within its depths like swimmers in a sea: A cigarette between red lips that garble Shrill lines of syncopated melody: Dark brows that slope toward faint mocking corners, A head that rolls to jazz’s frenzied beat — And eyes that should be a Madonna’s mantle For soft-limbed babes unborn , but yet most sweet. —UNA CURRIE. Auckland. SHYNESS (Written for THE SUN.) This is the honey in my comb of days — He knows my lost, unfriendly little ways. He’ll send the angels back that wait on Him, And fescue me from gracious cherubim. —EILEEN DUGGAN. Wellington.
