OLD CHURCHES REBUILT DEDICATION NEXT SUNDAY Monuments to the pioneer days of the Anglican Church in New Zealand, two old churches, which have been restored, will start new periods of service on Sunday. QELWYN CHURCH, formerly known as Holy Trinity Churcfti, Otahuhu, which last year was removed to Mangero East, and the Church of St. Matthias, Panmure, will be dedicated by the Primate, Archbishop Averill. Faithfully rebuilt on the original design, Seljwyn Church, is a pretty but dignified building. It was opened by Bishop Selwyn, who was accompanied by Bishop Fatteson, of Melanesia, on December 27, 1863„ and it is probably tfhe oiiiy church bearing the name of of one of the greatest churchmen of New Zealand history. The repairing of the building, including the rebuilding of the tower, cost £6OO. St. Matthias’s had to be almost entirely rebuilt, but the designers have been careful not to harm the mellow beauty of its colour and fofm. interior has been improved with leadligfhts and dignified fittings. The cost of the tower of this church was originally defrayed by the family of the Rev. James Hamlin, one of the old missionaries who worked among the Maoris before the country became a British Colony. The service at Selwyn Church will be held in the evening, and that of St. Matlfhias in the morning.
