RUGBY VISITS

ENGLISH AND FRENCH TEAMS WILL VISIT N.Z. TOURS IN 1930 AND 1931 Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. It will come as good news to Rugby players and followers of the game to hear that an English team may visit New Zealand in 1930, and that it is almost certain that a French team will tour the Dominion in the following year. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-niglit considered a cablegram from Mr. Cecil Wray, the union’s representative in England. Upon resuming in open meeting the chairman, Mr. S. S. Dean, made the following statement: “It has been decided that the committee views with regret the decision of the International Board not to send a team to New Zealand in 1930 and has decided that an invitation be extended to the Union to send a team to New Zealand and New South Wales in 1930, advice having been received that the English Union is holding a meeting on April 13.” Mr. Dean further stated that Mr. E. G. Shaw, manager of the New South Wales team, had received advice from Mr C. F. Rutherford, international secretary of the French Rugby Federation, that a French team will accept an invitation to visit the Dominion in 1931. Mr. W. WAIPA UNION S REPORT GOOD SEASON LAST YEAR The annual report of the Waipa Rugby Union states that the 1927 season was a most successful one. The Te Awamutu Club, by right of being the season’s champion club, was the j holder of the Binnie Cup, and success- | fully defended it against the Walton Club, from Matamata. i During the season seven representa- ! tive matches were played, the result 1 being one won, one drawn and five lost, i .Messrs. P. Quin, E. Holmes, Wilkes ! and W. M. Winter were included at i various times to represent Waikato. ; During the season a junior representative team visited Auckland and played the Eden junior club at Eden Park, being -defeated by three points to nil. A visit was paid Te Awamutu by the University Colts team (Auckland). They were a good combination, being vastly superior to the local juniors. The union is short of referees and appeals to local sportsmen to help j them in the coming season by tak# i the whistle. PAPATOETOE CLUB There was a good attendance of members and intending members a| the annual meeting of the Papatoetoe Rugby Football Club, held in the Town Hall last evening. Mr. H. C. Webster presided. The report and balance sheet showed the funds of the club to be in a very satisfactory state, with a credit balance to commence the new year. It was decided to enter, teams in the third intermediate grade and sixth grade. Application is to be made to the town board for the use of a playing area on the recreation ground. The officers elected were as follow: Patron, Dr. J. J. Valentine; president, Mr. F. M. Waters; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Swaffield, senr., D. Burnside, Speedy, G. McCauley, S. Gubb, Ft. Gubb; secretary, Mr. W. B. Wotherspoon; treasurer, Air. I. Hamilton; committee, Messrs. E. Smith, F. Ivil, W. Tremaine, W. B. Wotherspoon and T. McCauley.
