IN LIONS’ CAGES

STOWAWAYS ON MAUNGANUI TRAVELLED FROM NEW ZEALAND Twelve stowaways chose a novel hiding-place when they boarded the Maunganui in New Zealand just before the boat left on her latest voyage to Sydney. They hid in empty lions’ cages and were not discovered until the ship was many days out on her voyage. The men were brought before the Central Court and remanded, pending arrangements being made for their deportation. , Later the real inhabitants of the cages arrived by the steamer Sierra. Three generations of lions and lionesses stepped ashore from the ship. They will have an honoured stay in Australia while the erstwhile occupants of their cages will probably be shipped back to the port from where they started.
