ORGAN RECITAL
HIGH-CLASS PROGRAMME There was a moderate attendance at the municipal organ recital last evening, when the city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett, played a programme of delightful organ solos, to the great pleasure of his audience. He opened with Basil Harwood’s “Paean,” treating each movement with commendable rhythmic freedom, while the climax was brought out with striking effect. “Allegretto in B Minor” afforded scope for refined registration, while Hollins’s “Morceau,” in the style of a Valse Caprice, was given with much brilliancy. Bach's “Prelude and Fugue in C” gave scope for Mr. Barnett to interpret the magnificent style of the great composer.. The solos also included a delightful series of sketches entitled, “Scenes in Kent,” from the pen of F. H. Wood. There was a very convincing style in the first of a series, “Aylesford Bridge, on the Medway,” while the number, “Allington Lock,” conveyed a delicate atmospheric charm. “Orchard Blossom” and “Rochester Bells” were among the most difficult of the numbers, the programme also including “Serenade” (Toselli) and “Allegro Vivace” (Morandi). Miss Berta Carr submitted artistic interpretations of the numbers. “Alone” (Chaminade) and “Spring Waters” (Rachmaninoff). Miss Carr’s encore songs were equally interesting. Mr. Leo Whittaker was a dependable accompanist.
