A message from Amsterdam says a sensation was created in Stock Exchange and society circles there by the news of a tragic shooting affair. Madame Van Eeghen, a niece of Sir Henri Deterding, director-general of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, the only woman member of the Stock Exchange, was found in her home with a bullet in her head. The bullet was extracted, but her condition is critical. Madame Van Eeghen’s husband, a prominent rubber merchant, was found fatally shot with a revolver. Sir Henri was interviewed at his home, Sunninghill Park, Ascot, late to-night, but he was unaware of the occurrence. —A. and N.Z.
