NEW REGENT BATH COMPETITIONS ON FRIDAY In tiie New Regent bath which has been constructed at the rear of the stage at a cost of nearly £SOO, a diving competition, open to all women of Auckland, will commence on Friday. The bath will be officially opened this evening by Mr. J. Enwright, chairman of the Auckland Swimming Centre. and this will be followed by an exhibition of diving. Set Bft 6in into the stage, the bath is of solid concrete, 22ft long by 9ft wide, and is the first to be constructed either in Australia or New Zealand. The water will be changed constantly, and will be pumped in and out by a specially-installed electric pump, which can clear the tank in an hour. The water will be electrically heated. In order to allqw people in all parts of the theatre to see the entry and recovery of the competitors, slanting mirrors will be placed at the rear of the bath. A kauri plank 15ft long by 20in wide and 3in thick will be erected on a movable tower for use as the spring board. In order that competitors who have not had much experience in diving will not have to compete against recognised (livers, the entrants will be divided into two classes. The prizes consist of a gold cup for the winner and medals for second and third. Any competitor may practise between 0 nun. and 10.30 a.m. to-morrow, or after the evening show. Advice was received yesterday* that the New Zealand Swimming Council had vetoed the permission given by the Auckland Centre, but the chairman, Mr. Enwright. communicated with the parent body last evening and all objections have been lifted. The competition therefore will proceed with the support and co-operation of that body. The first heats will be decided on Friday evening, and will then continue until the finals.
