Westport Club Has Record Fixture

CHIEF EVENT TO STEEL BAR KING CHEOPS WINS COLVIN MEMORIAL (Special to THE SUN) WESTPORT. Monday. The autumn meeting of the Westport Jockey Club was brought to a close to-day, in showery weather, but in the presence of a large attendance. The track was in good order and the racing keen and exciting. From every viewpoint the fixture was the most successful yet held by the club since its reorganisation and the success was well deserved, as the executive has experienced difficulty in past years, principally through climatic conditions and unsuitable dates, in keeping its head above water. Speculation was again brisk, the sum of .£8.553. being put through the machine against £7,304 for the final day last year. For the two days there was an increase of £2.905. the figures being: 1927. £14,248; 1928, £17.153. The Buller Handicap was won by Steel Bar. and after the race Mr. E. McPadden. president, presented owner Eldon Coates with a handsome silver cup given to the club by the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Young, rider of the winner, was the recipient of a gold-mounted whip, the gift of the president. The Colvin Memorial Handicap was annexed by King Cheops, recently purchased by a local sportsman. Mr. A. Bradley, and the win was a popular one. Leo Berkett was successful in both light-harness events. Star Cluster winning the mile heat and Insurance dead-heating with Prompter in the mile and a-half. Additional results; Waimangaroa Handicap Trot, It miles.—2 L. F.
