NOTES To-night Station IYA is to broadcast the second act of “Madame Butterfly,” produced by Madame Irene Ainsley. This Japanese tragedy, founded on the book of J. J. Long and the play of David Belasco, is one of Pucinni’s most popular operas. The story concerns an American named Pinkerton, who marries in Japanese fashion, Cho-Cho-San, or Madame Butterfly. In the second act we find Pinkerton has been recalled home, and three years have passed while Butterfly waits for the return of her sailor lover—in her eyes, her husband. Then comes a day when Pinkerton’s ship enters the harbour. The light-hearted American has, however, married a girl at home and is bringing the bride on his ship. Butterfly is broken-hearted, and kills herself with her father’s sword on which is the inscription, “To die with honour when one can no longer live with honour.” The opera is full of tuneful songs, those in scene two including: “Oh, Kindly Heavens!”, “Prayer to the Gods of Japan,” “He Will Return,” “One Fine Day,” “His Letter,” “Shake the Cherry Tree,” and “Humming Chorus.”
