Burglars Sample Whisky and Cigars
WAREHOUSE ENTERED DOOR PANEL BROKEN Burglars who entered the premises of Messrs. John Reid and Co., wine and spirit merchants, of Anzac Avenue, late last evening, apparently were disturbed while in the act of having a good time with whisky and cigars. Although this morning there were distinct signs of the visit, the only goods missed were a bottle—or perhaps two —of whisky, and a few cigars from the box which was on the table in the reception room. Ever since the epidemic of burglaries in this avenue last year, a night-watchman has patrolled the area and a constable visited the street on his beat. The intruders evaded both policeman and night-watchman, however, and entered the place by breaking a small glass panel on the door and unlocking it from the inside. There is a burglar-proof lock on the door, but this apparently was not clipped before the place was locked up last evening, and it was a simple process for the burglars to unlock it as soon as they had broken the glass panel in. Several drawers in the office desks were ransacked, indicating that before starting on an impromptu “spree” the uninvited samplers of the firm’s good liquor had searched for whatever they could find valuable in the office desks. No documents or money was missed.
