INJURED FOOTBALLERS
RUGBY UNION’S SCHEME CREATING A FUND The suggestion that something should be put away each year to build upa special fund from which spontaneous relief might be given to injured players, was advanced at the annual meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union last evening, by Mr. A. St. Clair Belcher. He considered that although the question had been aired before, some other scheme shoulcf be devised. Responding to an invitation to the Management Committee to “lay its cards on the table.” Mr. H. Frost said that year after year exhaustive study of the question of providing for injured players had been made, but nothing better than the machinery at present in existence had been evolved. The sum of £ 800 was laid aside, but that was earmarked to send the representative team South this winter. Mr. J. Arneil said it was apparently the idea of Mr. Belcher to establish an independent relief fund, and not a new insurance scheme. The suggestion that the proceeds of one match a year be applied to the creation of such a fund, was made by Mr. E. Casey, who moved, with the concurrence of Mr. Belcher, that this be done, and that the Management Committee consider the project. After some discussion the motion was carried.
