TAUMARUNUI NEWS

MAORI CHIEF’S FUNERAL Sir Maui Pomare represented the Government at the funeral of the highly-respected Maori chieftain, Pikikotuku Te Huia, which took place at the Maori burial ground, Taumarunui, on Sunday. The late chief, who passed away after a serious illness, held the respect of all who knew him, for he was a .man of sterling worth, and wielded a great influence for good over the natives he came in contact with. In addition to Sir Maui Pomare and his private secretary, Mr.*'A. J. Conway, Mr. R. Campbell, manager of the Cook Islands Trading Company, and Mr. M. Patupatu, adviser to the Maniapoto Maori Land Board, were among those present at the service. The obsequies were conducted by the Rev. J. E. Ward, Presbyterian Maori missioner, with the assistance of Mr. William Bell and the Revs. Hikairo and Penirapa. The funeral was attended by a large, crowd of sympathisers, and the Taumarunui Boys’ Band rendered “Lead, Kindly Light,” and “Abide With Me.” + * * • Heavy rain caused keen disappointment at the annual meeting of the Ohura Sports Club, the weather practically spoiling the day, for both visitors and competitors. Several of the more important events were deleted from the programme. The 220yds handicap went to S. L. Bedell, with C. Taylor second and Cleland third. S. L. Bedell also won the 440yds handicap, with Cleland second and Taylor third. Flying young birds from Te Awamutu, the Manunui Pigeon Club continued its series, the result being: R. Patterson’s Break o’ Bay, 1,083.3yds a minute, 1; B. Andrews’s Patters, 1,073.6 yds, 2; B. Wilson’s Silver Star, 1,044 yds, 3; J. Whittaker’s Gloaming, 081.4 yds, 4. The club’s next race will commence from south, the race being from Waiouru. A tennis match between representatives of the Taumarunui and Ohura centres took place at Ohura on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the home team by 15 sets to five, or 141 games to 105. Play was very keen throughout, but the Ohura players quickly obtained and held the upper hand.
