An interesting story was related by Sir Frank Benson, the famous actormanager, at a luncheon given by the City Livery Club. Sir Frank said a certain young man, until he reached the age of 30, found everything unpleasant. Life gave him a headache. At the outbreak of war
he was afraid to join up for fear the guns would give him a headache. Ultimately he found himself at Zeebrugge, in charge of a mine-sweeper. His job was to set a smoke screen behind which to carry off the survivors from the ship that blocked the mouth of the canal. He carried a small black cat on his shoulder, did his job awarded a Victoria Cross. When the i King asked him wliat was his pro j fession before the war he replied that: j he was ashamed to say—he was a pro ' fessed invalid.
