CITY DOCTOR FINED
SEQUEL TO CAR SMASH CHARGE OF INTOXICATION NAME SUPPRESSED A young Auckland -medical man who pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day to a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car, was fined £ls. His name was suppressed. THE charge was laid as the result of an accident which happened in O’Neill Street, Ponsonby, on March 17. Mr. R. A. Singer, who appeared for accused, said that the incident occurred late at night. There was no doubt that aqcused had consumed sufficient liquor to justify the charge. Accused had suffered heavy expense and distress, and anything but a monetary penalty would be out of all proportion to the offence. He was on the brink of professional life, and publication of his name would mean ruination. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that the car hit the kerb and the axle was broken. It was not possible to say whether the smash into the kerb caused the axle to break, or whether the breaking of the axle caused the smash into the kerb. The accused was much under the influence of drink, and both he and a passenger were cut about. Mr. Singer: It has been established that the accident was due to a tyre blow-out. Accused was fined £ls, and the magistrate, Mr. E. C. Cutten, suppressed his name.
