MYSTERIOUS WILL
NON-EXISTENT BENEFICIARIES . and my beautiful home, Maritimo, shall be razed to the ground.” Thus, ungrammatically, did the late John Frederick William Payne, of Maritimo, Toorak Road, South Yarra, Melbourne, decide in his will what was to be done to his home. Moreover, he left money to children he didn’t have! The dead man left £508,593, and his will was made on Februarv 15 1926. One clause provides that after cer-
tain provisions had been complied with, his residuary estate should be held in trust for his children, each of his sons to receive three times as much as his daughters. But he died childless! To his solicitor, Edward Luke Vail, he bequeathed £5,000; to his gardener, William Smith, £3,000; and £IOO to each person in his employ for not less than three consecutive years. His widow is to get £3.000 immediately, and £5.000. free from all taxes, yearly. The most surprising clause in bis will, however, was that directing that as soon as practicable his home, Maritimo, should be destroyed. No reason was given.
