PERSONAL NOTES

Fanciers will regret to hear that Mr. B. Finnegan, who is well known in Auckland fancy pigeon circles, and who was recently elected president of the Christchurch Poultry. Pigeon and Canary Club, has decided to relinquish his position. His resignation will come before the club on Monday next. Mrs. Davidson, secretary of the New Zealand Rhode Island Red Club, who has, for some time now, been one of the most successful breeders and exhibitors of Rhode Island Reds in the Dominion, is paying special attention to several pullets which she anticipates will be in readiness for the June show. Fanciers will regret to hear, however, that she has decided to give up showing after the end of the coming show season and also to relinquish her position as secretary to the Rhode Island Red Club.

Mrs. Davidson has been such a keen fancier that we feel sure that the fancier spirit will come out on top, and we shall find her birds in the Red Alley when another year comes round. Mr. Walter Jones, the noted Brown Leghorn breeder, has been spending a week in Christchurch, and has visited most of the fanciers’ yards there. No doubt the recent importation of Brown Leghorns from England would be of especial interest to him.

Sussex are going strong in all parts of the Dominion, and competition will be keen at the Sussex Club >how, which is, this year, being held in Christchurch.

We hear that Mrs. Greenslade, Spreydon, has a wonderful lot of stock from her imported birds. Mr. Griffin (Governor’s Bay), late caretaker New Zealand Utility Club’s Laying Test, has a fine lot, too, and reports excellent business in the way of sales. Our North Island fanciers will need to make special efforts for the club show.

Mr. Lowcay has a few particularly fine specimens of Black Leghorns which should bring further honours to his yards. Black Leghorns are not as popular as they deserve to be. We wonder if double mating is the drawback.

CANARY NOTES

The Auckland Yorkshire Canary Club’s Young Bird Show will be held on April 21. Mr. W. A. Hanson is officiating as judge, and as this is the first time Mr. Hanson has officiated as judge at an Auckland Yorkshire Canary Club show, the club should be assured of a good entry.

The imported canaries held in trust by Mr. T. W. Brown, the president of the Auckland Canary and Cage Bird Club, will be balloted for at the next meeting of the club, when it is expected there will be a record attendance-

The Auckland Canary and Cage Bird Club has decided to hold its young bird show early in May. All canary fanciers should endeavour to support this fixture, and thus ensure its being an annual one. Some fanciers object to the holding of young bird shows, invariably giving their reason for so doing as having had a bad breeding season. This is a selfish attitude to adopt. They should think of the other man.

The following is culled from a letter received from Mr. Moore, secretarv of the Auckland Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Club, also secretary Yorkshire Canary Club. “New members are gradually ccming along, and the fancy is progressing rapidly, and much of the credit belongs to this column. So you old hands support The Sun, and do not forget when you have birds to sell, an advertisement on this page will do the trick.”

During the week another member has been added to the already long list of fanciers in the Hanson family. This time a daughter to Air. and Airs. Vic. Hanson
