Musical Comedy is Best School

Heather Thatcher in Straight Play Is the musical comedy stage the best school for the straight play? Undoubtedly it has proved to be so in the case of Heather Thatcher, whose latest success is as leading lady in “Quest,”- at the Criterion Theatre, London. Many dramatic critics believe that musical comedy actresses who act in ordinary plays succeed because they have acquired alertness and are able to take control of the stage. The action and the adventure in “Quest” make a special appeal to Miss Thatcher. She is at her best when acting as a barmaid in a dockland inn and on board a yacht. It is not generally known that, in order to obtain local colour, Miss Thatcher, together with the members of the cast, went for a cruise in the yacht owned by Mr. Ralph Stock, the author of “Quest.” Miss Thatcher, who is an excellent jailor, enjoyed herself greatly, and was able to profit by her experiences. It is interesting to note that some years ago Mr. Stock sailed his own 24ton yacht Quest to the South Seas. He left England in search of adventure, and what happened to Mr. Stock in the Southern Seas is to some extent reproduced in the play.
