HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL

MASTER CONGRATULATED Congratulations to the principal of the Hamilton High School, Mr. E. Wilson, on the highly satisfactory manner in which the school has been conducted were extended by the Board of Governors at it annual meeting on Friday. ' Mr. C. L. Mac Diarmid presided. In his annual report Mr. McDiarmid said last year the teaching staff numbered 16. The number of scholars on the roll at the beginning of the year was 405, and the year closed with a roll of 371. There were 20 girls in residence at the School House in 1927. but this year the number had increased to 27. Various improvements and additions had been made in connection with the school grounds. Mr. Mac Diarmid reported that the school buildings had been maintained at a high standard. At no time in its history had the school been on a higher level, and the speaker believed that its value and usefulness as an educational institution was widely recognised. The school had more than held its own in the matter of examination successes and academic results. The report was adopted. The chairman referred to the board’s applications for financial assistance toward the cost of establishing hostels for scholars, and said the Government had intimated that it was not spending money on hostels. The secretary, Mr. R. English, quoted a list showing the amount spent in different New Zealand towns on high school buildings from 1914 to 1926. This showed that a total of £257,670 had been spent. Nothing had been spent in Hamilton on high school buildings since 1914, whereas in New Plymouth £20,000 was spent in 1916, and £23,000 was spent on a new hostel in 1927. Mr. Mac Diarmid said once a boys’ hostel was erected on the board’s property at Hamilton East the department would be committed to the erection of buildings on that site. It was the board’s idea that ultimately the present school building should be utilised for girls, and that a new school building should be built for boys at Hamilton East. It was resolved to write to the department renewing the board’s application for a hostel.
