Maoris Aroused
USE OF NETS PROHIBITED TREATY OF WAITANGI QUOTED (Special to THE SUX) WANGANUI, To-day. The Maoris of the Wanganui district are indignant at the newlygazetted regulation forbidding the use of nets in the river. Thousands of natives get a great part of their food supplies by this means, and they claim that the letter of tlie Treaty of Waitangi, which expressly ensured their fishing rights, has been broken. Under the regulation it is unlawful to use or set a net for taking fish in any portion of the Wanganui River, or to use a net of any description whatever for taking fish in that portion of the river above the Town Bridge. Very few people ever bother to net below the bridge owing to pollution by sewerage residue from various tar industries. All fishing is done above. In the whitebait season netting is a considerable source of revenue to the Maoris, and this, too, will have to be stopped.
