MASTER OF MARINERS
PRINCE ATTENDS DINNER BRITAIN’S MERCHANT NAVY By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Wednesday. The Prince of Wales, for the first time in his capacity as Master of the Merchant Navy, attended the Master Mariner Company’s dinner. He was loudly cheered when he drank from a loving cup before it was passed round among the company. The Prince thanked fellowcountrymen in all parts of the world for their messages of congratulation upon his appointment to the Mastership. The importance of the appointment was not realised by him until he studied the statistics, which showed there were 30,000 craft, from liners to barges, employing 250,000 men, registered in the Empire. In addition there were 20.000 fishing boats manned by 65,000 British sailors. His Royal Highness paid a tribute to the master mariners for their services in the Great War. He said he hoped Ais Mastership would coincide with a revival of prosperity in the shipping industry.—A. and N.Z.
