Successful Racing at Rangitikei

KEEN CONTESTS-CLOSE FINISHES HIPCTS FRASER MEMORIAL (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Thursday. The Rangitikei Racing Club’s autumn carnival terminated to-day in fine weather and before a large attendance. The racing was of a high order, close finishes being a prominent feature. The totalisator handled £II,BOO for the day, against £11,875 for the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £25,649, an increase of £2OO on the 1927 figures. Improved Showing For the Sanson Hurdles Elysianor, Bonliomme and Mountain Bell received strong support. Mountain Bell unshipped her rider at the second fence. Elysianor out jumped Eonhomme at the penultimate fence, to land first into the straight from Bonhomme, with Polyphemus also lodging a challenge, and in the run home Elysianor, who had given a much-im-proved showing on his first, day’s performance, held on to win by a short length, with Polyphemus a head behind Bonliomme, the latter having weakened in the last few strikes. Correct Judgment Thrift and Fee Simple were entrusted with three-quarters of the money in the Maiden Handicap, and they proved to be the dividend payers. Fee Simple and Kyngzone were smartest out at the barrier rise, with Vexillum and Thrift next in attendance, but approaching the half-mile post Thrift deposed Kyngzone, and Second Thought also improved his position. Fee Simple was, however, clear of Thrift as they turned for home, with Kyngzone and Skyrider in behind. In the run to the judge’s box Fee Simple held his position, to win by a length from Thrift, with Double Mint. Skyrider and Kyngzone next. Hipo Scores Well Vivo was installed a firm favourite for the'Fraser Memorial. At barrier rise he went to the front from Hipo, Capitulation, Bright Day and Twink, and they raced in that order out of the straight and into the back, where the favourite was holding a twolengths’ advantage. The field closed up round the top, but with the straight reached Hipo dashed past the leader, with Twink putting forward a late effort, the pair drawing right away from Vivo. Hipo held a margin of two lengths over Twink at the post, with Vivo a further three lengths back. Bright Day was an indifferent fourth, with Capitulation close up. Warm Favourite Beaten In the Ngaio Handicap, Mendip was sent out a warm order. He delayed the start, but when the tapes lifted he accompanied Vigilance out of the barrier, although running along the back the favourite gave way to Holus Bolus. Crossing the top Vigilance and Holus Bolus were together, with Mendip, Hymestrason and Moutoa Wonder in line. Vigilance drew out in the straight, with Mendip in pursuit, but Vigilance answered the call to win by half a length, with Moutoa Wonder third, half a dozen lengths back. Hymestrason was fourth and Holus Bolus next. Dobbin Makes Amends Vast Acre was favourite for the Greatford Handicap, and immediately ran to the front to show the way to Miss Pat, White Ringlet, Dobbin, Bonognc and Nastori along the back. Crossing the top Vast Acre* and Miss Pat were on terms, with Dobbin in behind, and Nastori at the latter’s quarters. On landing into the straight Dobbin joined issue with Vast Acre and Miss Pat, and in a good finish hung on gamely to win from Vast Acre by half a length, Bonogne cutting Miss Pat out of third money in the last few strides. Stirring Finish For the Rangitoto Handicap,.Royal Acre was favourite. At the six-fur-long post Gasnapper worked up to Airtight, with Aropeta, Royal Acre, JJorsalene, Bissac and Maui next in order. Crossing the top, Airtight and Gasnapper were on terms, with Aropeta and Royal Acre in front of the lunch. At the straight entrance Aropeta and Royal Acre joined the leaders, and a great struggle from the distance saw Aropeta draw out over the last few yards to win by a neck from Royal Acre, who was a head in front of Gasnapper, with Airtight right up lourth. Ruanui’s Dual Win In the Ivilleymoon Handicap, in which Oration was preferred to Partaga, approaching the half-mile Manly led with Ruanui, with Oration and Partaga in behind. At the straight Manly had taken the lead, but ran a shade wide, and Ruanui shot to the front, with Partaga coming in hot pursuit. The challenger could not get closer than half a length to the first day’s winner, there being a gap of three lengths to Manly, with Oration and Capitulation next. The last-named travelled fast over the last pinch. Final to Eka £ h £i Farewell Handicap saw Helotus Jind Eka well backed, and they were in front all the way, and in the end Eka won by a length from Helofeus, with Rash a moderate third.
