VALUE OF RETURNS
“SAVED COUNCIL THOUSANDS” CR. MURRAY’S JUSTIFICATION “I saved this council many thousands of pounds,” said Councillor W. H. Murray, expressing resentment at the City Council meeting last evening that his request for figures concerning the supply of kerbs and pitchers had been rejected on the grounds that earlier returns supplied to him did not appear to have served any useful purpose. He claimed that the earlier return had been responsible for effecting great economies, and the alteration of an iniquitous system. The subject on which figures were sought was the supply of kerbs and pitchers since February, 1925. Cr. J. A. C. Allum deplored the frequency with which irrelevant returns were asked for. The staff was overworked enough. If Mr. Murray could show that there was something wrong, to justify his request, he would support him, but not otherwise. “Let Cr. Murray put 4iis cards on the table. We want facts, not state- | inents,” said Councillor J. H. Paterson, j accusing Mr. Murray of “hedging.” I “A councillor has every right to ask ! a question for his own edification,” said Councillor Murray later in the evening.
