MENTAL PATIENT’S DEATH

CLOTHES CAUGHT FIRE INQUEST AT CHRISTCHURCH Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. When a woman patient, aged 31 years, in the Sunnyside Mental Hospital was attending to a fire on Sunday morning, her clothes caught fire and she died later from severe burns. The deceased had been an inmate since 1924. At the inquest to-day the coroner, Mr. Young, S.M., found that the woman had died from the effects of severe burns, accidentally received. It was stated in evidence that the woman was putting coal on the fire, when her apron caught fire. She ran screaming down the ward and was almost immediately seized by two sisters, who rolled her on the floor and put blankets over her to smother the flames. She was at once given medical attention.
