MAORI HYGIENE

OFFICE STILL WANTED IN AUCKLAND AKARANA ASSOCIATION Restoration of the office of Maori Hygiene to Auckland is still hoped for by the Akaranu Maori Association, which considers that the health of the native people is suffering in consequence of the removal of the office. The association met last night, Mr. J. Rukutai presiding. It was decided to wait until after the visit of Dr. E. P. Ellison, Director of Maori Hygiene; before a report should be drawn up. There was discussion on the proposal to give lectures on Maori history and customs to local societies, and a subcommittee was set up to consider the subjects. The destruction of volcanic hills was discussed and it was decided to protest against the quarrying of any more areas on Rangitoto, the opinion being expressed that the harbour board’s present area was sufficient for all the local bodies. The association decided that it was absolutely opposed to quarrying rights being granted to private people. Letters to this effect were sent to the Prime Minister, to the Devonport Domain Board, and to the Auckland Town-Planning Association. As no reply had been received in response to a request that native children should be given the attention of dental clinics, it was decided to write again to the Native Education Department. Arrangements were made to welcome the Waikato Princess Tc Puea on her arrival in Auckland, and it was decided to discuss with her the efforts for the social welfare of her people.
